Severity of atopic dermatitis is associated with sensitisation to egg or to cow's milk in young children.
Sensitisation to egg also indicates atopic dermatitis is likely to persist and to continue to be severe, European researchers say. They add that indications of severity are less with sensitisation to cow's milk.
Investigators studied a cohort of 397 children aged 12 to 24 months. All had been diagnosed with atopic dermatitis. Participants were followed for 18 months.
The researchers examined the children using the objective Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (Scorad) measure. Participants were also tested for specific IgE to egg and cow's milk at study inclusion and at three, 12 and 18 months. Data on 382 patients were included in analysis.
"Sensitisation to egg and cow's milk was more common in atopic children with severe atopic dermatitis at all time-points," report researchers from University Hospital in Rotterdam, the Netherlands; Humboldt University in Berlin and University Hospital in Heidelberg, Germany; University Hospital in Linkoping, Sweden and UCB Pharma in Brussels, Belgium. They note that children who were at baseline sensitised to both egg and cow's milk had the most severe atopic dermatitis.
