NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 08 – Surgery can be avoided in approximately half of patients with Crohn's disease-related abdominal abscesses that are treated by percutaneous drainage, investigators in Boston report.
Dr. Debra A. Gervais and associates, of Massachusetts General Hospital, report in the March issue of Radiology on the outcomes of 32 such patients who underwent percutaneous abscess drainage. All but two patients were deemed a "technical success," based on complete abscess drainage and clinical improvement, or–if surgery was subsequently performed–there was no residual pus at the surgical site.
