NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 06 – Tuberculosis (TB) prophylaxis with isoniazid appears effective in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) receiving long-term glucocorticosteroid treatment, Indian researchers report in the March issue of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
Dr. V. R. Joshi and colleagues, at P. D. Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai, note that in India the prevalence of TB in SLE patients receiving steroids may be as high as 13.7%.
To investigate the efficacy of isoniazid prophylaxis in such circumstances, the researchers studied 97 patients. Over a 1-year period, they were given a daily dose of isoniazid 5 mg/kg (up to a maximum of 300 mg/day) and pyridoxine 10 mg/day.
