NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 01 – Annual endoscopic surveillance of patients with atrophic gastritis or intestinal metaplasia detects new tumors at an early stage, according to a report in the March issue of Gut. This may result in improvement in survival rates.
"A large proportion of patients attending open access endoscopy have histological and gross pathological findings that are potentially premalignant," Dr. J. W. L. Fielding and colleagues from Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, UK, note. They examined the incidence of gastric cancers in this high-risk group, and evaluated the potential for the early diagnosis and treatment of these cancers.
Of the 1753 patients attending open access endoscopy, 166 with dysplasia, intestinal metaplasia, atrophic gastritis, foveolar hyperplasia, regenerative changes, polyps, or ulcers underwent annual surveillance endoscopy. In addition, those with ulcers were reevaluated at two monthly intervals until ulcers were healed. …
