Noetic therapies improve outcomes in patients undergoing angioplasty

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – Noetic interventions (those that do not involve a drug, device, or surgery) improve outcomes in patients with unstable coronary syndromes, researchers report in the November issue of the American Heart Journal.

Dr. Mitchell W. Krucoff from Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, and colleagues from the Monitoring and Actualization of Noetic Training (MANTRA) pilot study enrolled 150 such patients who were scheduled for percutaneous coronary intervention. Of those, 30 were randomized to standard care while 120 were assigned to receive one of four noetic therapies: relaxation therapy, guided imagery, touch therapy, or intercessory prayer provided offsite by prayer groups. All patients were treated medically.

Although the results were not statistically significant for any outcome comparisons, there was a 25% to 30% reduction in post-procedure adverse events in patients receiving any noetic therapy compared with those receiving standard care, the MANTRA investigators found. Patients receiving intercessory prayer had the lowest absolute complication rates, they add.

Patients with a high level of spiritual belief, a high level of personal spiritual activity, low level of community-based religious involvement, or a high level of anxiety gained the most benefit from noetic therapies compared with standard care, according to the results of a patient questionnaire, the researchers note.

By the 6-month follow-up, all mortality had occurred in the combined noetic therapy group, but the difference between that group and the standard care group was not statistically significant.

Dr. Krucoff's team concludes that "as adjuncts to modern technology, noetic therapies with potential influence on mind, body and spirit may promote a more optimal healing environment for patients undergoing percutaneous cardiac intervention."
