Karo skin atrophy drug appears to have no benefit over placebo

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Swedish biopharmaceutical company Karo Bio announced on Tuesday that KB002611, the company's phase II skin atrophy cream, appears to offer no benefit over placebo.

According to the company, data from a sonography–used to measure skin thickness–of clinical trial patients indicated that there was no apparent difference between KB002611 and placebo in reversing the effects of skin-damaging topical corticosteroids.

Karo said that a final conclusion on the drug will not be made until biopsies have been completed. The firm said that, based on the final results of the study, it will consider whether it will seek a partner for the product or continue development on its own.

Company officials were not available for further comment.
