Extended-release venlafaxine appears safe and effective for anxiety

סקירה זו באדיבות אתר מדיקונטקסט:LONDON (Reuters Health) – Confirming previously reported findings, a new trial by Swedish researchers shows that extended-release venlafaxine appears to be safe and effective for treating generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) for up to 6 months, according to a report in the July issue of the British Journal of Psychiatry.

Dr. Christer Allgulander, from the Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, and colleagues randomly assigned 541 outpatients with GAD to placebo or one of three doses of extended-release venlafaxine:, 37.5 mg, 75 mg, or 150 mg. To determine the efficacy of the treatment, the researchers evaluated patients using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety (HRSA) and other depression indexes.

Over the 24-week trial, the researchers found that all three doses of venlafaxine were superior to placebo. Improvement among venlafaxine users was seen by the second week of treatment. At 6 months, patients receiving 75 mg and 150 mg of venlafaxine had significant changes in their HRSA scores, compared with those who received placebo.

After 24 weeks, patients receiving 75-mg venlafaxine had a mean change in HRSA score from baseline of 15.5, and those taking 150-mg venlafaxine had a mean change of 16.4 compared with 11.0 for those receiving placebo, Dr. Allgulander's group reports

"Other pharmacologic treatment options, such as the benzodiazepines, bring quick symptom relief but are associated with side effects and potential dependence, which may hinder compliance," Dr. Allgulander said in a institute statement.

"Other antidepressant treatments for GAD…have demonstrated only short-term…improvement in symptoms," Dr. Allgulander pointed out. "Venlafaxine extended-release is backed by extensive efficacy and safety research, as well as widespread therapeutic use, that demonstrate it can sustain treatment in patients with GAD over the long term."
