The risk to the fetus of radiation exposure from a range of uro-radiological procedures during pregnancy is very small and should not exclude their appropriate use, according to a report in the December 2002 BJU International.
Dr. Nigel Cowan and colleagues from The Churchill Hospital in Oxford, UK reviewed the radiation risks of placing double-pigtail ureteric stents during pregnancy in 7 women with loin pain associated with hydronephrosis. The procedure is an established method for treating ureteral obstruction, they say, but it is not widely used during pregnancy.
