USPSTF Has Insufficient Evidence for or Against Prostate Cancer Screening

The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has found insufficient evidence to recommend for or against prostate cancer screening, according to clinical guidelines published in the Dec. 3 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine. Although prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing did find cancers earlier, there was no evidence to support that this improved clinical outcomes, and there was demonstrable harm associated with screening.

“The USPSTF found good evidence that PSA screening can detect early-stage prostate cancer but mixed and inconclusive evidence that early detection improves health outcomes,” the guidelines state. “Screening is associated with important harms, including frequent false-positive results and unnecessary anxiety, biopsies, and potential complications of treatment of some cases of cancer that may never have affected a patient’s health.”
