The tension-free vaginal tape (TVT) sling procedure is proving an effective treatment for urodynamic stress urinary incontinence, significantly decreasing maximum flow rate without severely affecting detrusor pressure in the short term.
Emily S. Lukacz, MD, Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery, University of California-San Diego, United States, presented the study findings here October 18 at the annual scientific meeting of the American Urogynecologic Society (AUGS).
She stressed the need for longer-term follow-up to determine whether delayed effects might occur. The prospective cohort study involved 65 patients who underwent TVT sling procedures, using the Ethicon sling for treatment of stress urinary incontinence between August 1999 and March 2001.
Free flow voiding studies and voiding cystometry were performed prior to the surgery and one year post-operatively to assess maximum flow rate, flow time, and both detrusor pressure at maximum flow and maximum detrusor pressure.
