For patients with prostate cancer who are to undergo radical prostatectomy, 3 months of neoadjuvant hormonal therapy before surgery has no benefit and is not recommended, Scandinavian researchers report.
“Combining two different treatments against cancer is an appealing approach,” lead researcher Dr. Gunnar Aus told Reuters Health. “We tested blocking out testosterone for 3 months prior to radical prostatectomy.” Dr. Aus from Sahlgrens University Hospital, G teborg, Sweden, and colleagues randomly assigned 126 men with localized prostate cancer to direct radical prostatectomy or to 3 months of treatment with a gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue before surgery.
