The polycomb group protein ‘enhancer of zeste’ homolog 2 (EZH2) is overexpressed in hormone-refractory metastatic prostate cancer, and may be involved in cancer progression along with serving as a marker of poor outcome, researchers report in the October 10th issue of Nature.
“We have found a novel protein called EZH2 that is elevated in metastatic prostate cancer,” Dr. Arul M. Chinnaiyan told Reuters Health. “Clinically localized prostate cancer specimens that express higher levels of EZH2 tend to exhibit an aggressive behavior or poor clinical outcome. EZH2 levels may serve as a tissue biomarker distinguishing indolent prostate cancer from aggressive prostate cancer,” Dr. Chinnaiyan said.
