PC-SPES Drug Contaminants Active Against Prostate Cancer

Chemical analyses of PC-SPES, a dietary supplement touted for reducing prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels in prostate cancer patients, revealed that it was contaminated with several drugs: warfarin, diethystilbesterol (DES), and indomethacin.

Results of a new study examining eight separate lots of PC-SPES, published in the Sept. 4 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, indicate that the problem is much more widespread than original reports suggested.

All lots contained indomethacin and most of the lots also contained DES. After removal of these contaminants from the supplement, the anticancer activity of the supplement fell six-fold, suggesting that most, if not all, of the cancer-fighting abilities of PS-PCES may be due to these contaminants and not to its herbal ingredients.

“Attempts to identify the active compounds in PC-SPES have yielded incongruous results,” write Milos Sovak, MD, from the Biophysica Foundation in La Jolla, California, and

colleagues. “The origin of the three potent synthetic drugs in PC-SPES is puzzling.”
