Tension-free vaginal tape appears as effective as colposuspension for the primary treatment of stress incontinence, and both techniques demonstrate a high cure rate.
Clinicians found that operative complications are more common with vaginal tape than with colposuspensio, but duration of hospital stay and return to normal activity are shorter. Postoperative complications were more common after colposuspension.
A five-year follow-up is planned by clinicians with the United Kingdom and Ireland Tension-free Vaginal Tape Trial Group.
The study is being carried out at gynaecology or urology departments in 14 centres in Britain and the Republic of Ireland. Systematic reviews show colposuspension has produced the best surgical results when compared with other treatments for urodynamic stress incontinence. Cure rates as high as 90 percent have been reported among women who had no previous surgery for incontinence.
