Severe Hepatitis Linked With Dietary Supplement for Weight Loss

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 18 – Seven patients have required treatment for severe hepatotoxicity after taking a dietary supplement marketed for weight loss called LipoKinetix. According to the manufacturer, Syntrax (Cape Girardeau, Missouri), the mix of compounds purportedly works by "modifying a process in the body called oxidative phosphorylation" and "mimics exercise."
Dr. Joya T. Favreau, of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and colleagues report online in the Annals of Internal Medicine for April 16th that seven patients, taking the supplement according to manufacturer's recommendations, developed symptoms within 4 to 12 weeks. Three patients required hospitalization, and one developed stage 3 encephalopathy. Symptoms and liver enzyme levels returned to normal within 4 months after discontinuation of the capsules.

Analysis of LipoKinetix capsules confirmed that they contained the ingredients listed on the product label: norephedrine hydrochloride, sodium usniate, 3,5-diiodothyronine, yohimbine hydrochloride, and caffeine. No heavy metals or other contaminants were detected.
