Beclometasone Dipropionate Effects In Asthma Similar Among Routes Of Administration

Beclometasone dipropionate given by either nebulizer suspension or metered-dose inhaler, provides comparable results among adult asthma patients, French researchers say. Forty patients (aged 27 and 60 years) who had intermittent bronchial asthma were enrolled into a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial at Hopital Arnaud de Villeneuve, Montpellier.

The patients were divided into 4 groups of 10 members each. They received, over three weeks, either: 1,600 micrograms day(-1) beclometasone dipropionate (BDP) suspension BID via a nebulizer; 3,200 micrograms day(-1) BDP suspension BID via a nebulizer; BDP 800 micrograms day(-1) BID via a metered-dose inhaler (MDI) plus spacer; or placebo.

At the end of the study, treatment responses by the patients were comparable for the primary pharmacodynamic endpoint of FEV1 in response to methacholine bronchial provocation testing. However, there was a statistically significant improvement among patients who received the BDP 3,200 micrograms day(-1) suspension for nebulisation group, compared with pre-treatment for other parameters, including FEV1 and peak expiratory flow rates.
