Laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) is effective in the treatment of snoring in some patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), according to a report in the January issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.
However, there are only minor reductions in apnea/hypopnea scores and symptoms. In a randomized, controlled study, Dr. Kathleen A. Ferguson and colleagues from the University of Western Ontario, Canada, examined the effect of LAUP in patients with mild OSA. Forty-five subjects were randomized to receive LAUP or no treatment (controls).
