Omalizumab Therapy May Be Beneficial in Asthmatic Patients

Anti-IgE therapy with omalizumab may be warranted in some children with asthma, according to a review published in the January issue of the Archives of Disease in Childhood. Dr. H. Milgrom, of the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, Denver, discusses the pathogenesis of asthma in childhood and the rationale for omalizumab in the treatment of asthma.

 “Therapeutic strategies for children should include early anti-inflammatory therapy to prevent progression of the disease,” he notes. “Presently, the most effective treatment for asthma is the administration of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS).” However, several studies have shown some shortcomings of the ICS regimen, and thus the need for therapeutic alternatives.
