New Treatment Model Yields High Cure Rate of Drug-Resistant TB in Impoverished Area

A community-based, outpatient program can successfully treat patients with chronic multidrug-resistant pulmonary tuberculosis in a resource-poor country, investigators report in the January 9th issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

 Dr. Carole Mitnick, of Harvard Medical School in Boston, and her colleagues point out that that therapy for multidrug-resistant TB is “virtually nonexistent in poor countries,” because of limited resources and lack of infrastructure. Use of a modified DOTS (directly observed treatment strategy) program for such patients has been restricted to developed nations where care can be delivered within specialized referral centers.
