A connection between the reproduction of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and levels of iron has long been suspected but now scientists at the Berlin Max Planck Institute for Infection Biology say they have proved it.
A team led by Dr. Ulrich Schaible reports in the December issue of the Journal of Experimental Medicine that the rate at which the bacteria reproduce increases in an iron-rich environment, be that in vitro or in experimental animals.
