Restricting Sulfur Emissions Reduces Respiratory and Cardiovascular Death Rates

Restricting the amount of sulfur in fuel oils appears to be associated with a significant reduction in all-cause mortality rates, according to a report published in the November 23rd issue of The Lancet. The reduction in rates is most pronounced for deaths due to respiratory or cardiovascular causes.

Previous reports have shown that air pollutants, such as sulfur dioxide, have adverse health effects. Still, there have been few opportunities to see whether reducing sulfur dioxide levels in air could actually improve the health of the exposed population.
