An analysis of previously secret internal documents from the tobacco industry reveals that one of the main reasons it courted African American leadership groups was to defuse tobacco control efforts, according to research published in the December issue of Tobacco Control. Despite their high visibility, it remained unclear exactly why the industry was lavishing its support on African American groups.
