A study among British family practices has found that computer evidence based guidelines have no effect on the management of asthma or angina among adult patients.
In reality, computer guidelines are unlikely ever to be the “magic bullet” that answers all questions, declares Dr Martin Eccles and colleagues at the Center for Health Services Research, University of Newcastle, Newcastle upon Tyne, England.
Their research was carried out among 60 practices, and involved family doctors, practice nurses, and patients 18 and older who have angina or asthma. Despite the current interest in clinical guidelines, there remains uncertainty about how best to introduce them into routine practice, the researchers note. This prompted them to undertake a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled trial of a computer decision support system to implement clinical guidelines for the management of asthma and angina in adults in primary care.
