There is no statistical relationship between hearing loss in young children exposed as neonates to long courses of tobramycin.
However researchers suggest that although their study sample was small the results indicate the need for a case-controlled follow-up study of hearing in neonates exposed to aminoglycosides.
Researchers in universities and hospitals in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and Washington, USA undertook analysis on 29 children who had been exposed, as neonates, to periods exceeding seven days of tobramycin and/or high tobramycin serum concentrates. Data relative to tobramycin administration had been drawn from the patients’ files for a previous study. These children were then matched with controls who had not been exposed to the drug, and according to the criteria of the joint committee on infant hearing, for other risk factors.
