Bronchoalveolar Neutrophils Elevated in Wheezing Infants

Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid cell profiles of young children with severe recurrent wheezing show elevated levels of neutrophils, French researchers report in the September issue of Chest.

 Dr. Muriel Le Bourgeois of Hopital Necker-Enfants Malades, Paris, and colleagues note that “the physiopathology of recurrent episodes of wheezing in young children is unclear, but persistent bronchial inflammation may play an essential role.”

 To investigate, the researchers retrospectively examined BAL cell profiles from 83 children (ages 4 to 32 months) who had undergone fiberoptic bronchoscopy. All had recurrent wheezy bronchitis unresponsive to inhaled steroids.
