Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and a low body mass index (BMI) have an increase in skeletal muscle apoptosis.
Results of a study published in the August 15th issue of the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine also show that skeletal muscle apoptosis may contribute to lower exercise tolerance in these patients, regardless of lung function impairment.
“Patients with COPD often lose weight during the course of their disease,” Dr. Alvar G. N. Agusti and colleagues from Hospital Universitari Son Dureta, Palma Mallorca, Spain, note. To test the hypothesis that this may be due to skeletal muscle apoptosis, they obtained quadriceps femoris biopsies from 15 patients with COPD (8 with normal BMI and 7 with low BMI), 8 healthy subjects, and 6 sedentary subjects.
