Physicians in Britain are using photodynamic therapy (PDT) to treat inoperable bronchopulmonary cancer, resulting in significant reductions in airway obstruction and improvement in patients’ overall performance status.
The procedure was used at the Yorkshire Laser Centre, in Goole, East Yorkshire, in 146 patients with inoperable bronchopulmonary cancer.
Dr. Keyvan Moghissi, a surgeon at the centre who performed the procedure, presented results of the trial here at the annual meeting of the European Respiratory Society (ERS). Eleven of the patients had stage I disease, 118 had stage III, and 17 had stage IV.
The patients were given 2mg/kg body weight of photosensitiser, Photofrin, and were exposed to a 630 nm laser 24 to 72 hours later. The procedure was repeated five to seven days later if the tumour was considered “bulky”.
