ERS: Low Dose CT Scans Not Proven Successful in Detecting Very Early Lung Cancer

An Irish study has shown that low-dose computed tomography (CT) scan of the chest, in theory, can be used to detect very early stage lung cancer, but the investigators say the detection rate so far has been “disappointingly low”.

In a presentation on September 15th at the 12th Annual Meeting of the European Respiratory Society (ERS), Dr. Ruth MacRedmond, a senior registrar in respiratory diseases at Beaumont Hospital, in Dublin, discussed a study in which 449 subjects (224 men) over the age of 55 underwent CT scanning.

The subjects had all been pack-a-day smokers for a mean of 45 years, and had no prior cancer history. All were examined for non-calcified nodules. In all the scans, only one case of non-small cell lung cancer was detected, for a rate of 0.22 percent. The scans revealed six non-calcified nodules of more than 10 mm, 64 between 5 and 9 mm, and 79 less than 5 mm.
