Beclomethasone delivered from a hydrofluoroalkane inhaler results in greater drug deposition in the lung than that achieved with a chlorofluorocarbon propellant, according to a report in the August issue of Chest.
In a 6-day, open-label, nonrandomized, crossover study, Dr. Chet L. Leach, of Inhale Therapeutic Systems, San Carlos, California, and colleagues compared the lung deposition of radiolabeled hydrofluoroalkane-134a beclomethasone dipropionate (HFA-BDP), chlorofluorocarbon fluticasone dipropionate (CFC-FP), and chlorofluorocarbon beclomethasone dipropionate (CFC-BDP) in nine healthy, nonsmoking adults.
The subjects inhaled 1 to 2 puffs of one of the formulations on each study day. Planar gamma images were obtained immediately after inhalation of radiolabeled study drugs.
