Environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) at work, occupational hazards, and a history of pneumonia are associated with an increased risk of lung cancer in nonsmoking women, according to a report in the August 20th issue of the International Journal of Cancer. A diet rich in fresh vegetables and cheese appears to protect against lung cancer.
Dr. Michaela Kreuzer, of the Institute of Radiation Hygiene, Neuherberg, Germany, and colleagues used data from a case-control study to examine risk factors for lung cancer in nonsmoking women. Two hundred thirty-four women with lung cancer and 535 controls who had never smoked more than 400 cigarettes in their lifetime were interviewed about occupation, exposure to ETS, family history of cancer, prior lung disease or cancer and diet.
