Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) may play an important role in the clinical status of patients with bronchial asthma, Japanese investigators conclude in a paper in the August issue of Chest.
To assess the effect of GER on asthma status, Dr. Hiroshi Inoue and colleagues, from Iwate Medical University in Morioka, instilled saline solution or 0.1 N hydrochloric acid (HCl) into the distal esophagus of seven patients with bronchial asthma. At the same time, increasing doses of inhaled capsaicin were given until the subject coughed at least three times.
