IV administration of magnesium sulfate appears to be useful adjunct to standard treatment in certain patients with acute severe asthma, researchers report in the August issue of Chest. Dr. Robert A. Silverman of Long Island Jewish Hospital, New Hyde Park, New York, and colleagues note that previous studies of this approach have had mixed results.
In particular, they observe that the treatment may not be helpful in patients with mild-to-moderate asthma.
