Pre-term Lung Liquid May Contribute to Respiratory Disease

Pre-term infants appear to have higher lung water content than do term infants.

 Researchers report that this higher level of water content is associated with gravity-related changes consistent with dependent atelectasis and might contribute to respiratory disease in pre-term infants.

 Uneven distribution of lung liquid might be the cause of the heterogeneity of lung disease seen in pre-term infants, suggest researchers at Imperial College School of Medicine, Queen Mary’s University Hospital, and the Medical Research Council Clinical Sciences Centre, Hammersmith Hospital, London, UK.

 The researchers used magnetic resonance imaging to investigate lung liquid content and distribution in 16 pre-term (24-31 weeks) and nine term infants in the first week of life. They examined images of lung parenchyma and quantified relative proton density to give an index of lung liquid.
