The prevalence of aspirin-intolerant asthma (AIA) may be somewhat higher in Australia than it is in certain other parts of the world, according to researchers in Australia and the US.
Dr. Hassan Vally of the Asthma and Allergy Research Institute Inc., Perth, Western Australia, and colleagues note that surveys in North America and Europe have shown an AIA prevalence ranging from 3% to 9%.
However, the prevalence in “Australian asthmatic patients has not previously been reported.” Furthermore, as Dr. Vally told Reuters Health, “aspirin-intolerant asthma appears to represent a distinct asthma subtype characterized by more severe and persistent asthma and a greater reliance on corticosteroids. Despite the importance of this syndrome, our understanding of the pathophysiology is limited.”
