About a third of studied asthmatic children show low-density areas on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) scans that are possibly indicative of emphysema-like changes in lung structure, according to Italian researchers.
Reporting in the July issue of The Journal of Pediatrics, Dr. Massimo Pifferi of the University of Pisa and colleagues note that “low HRCT lung density may result either from air trapping or from emphysema.” Residual volume (RV), they also point out, has been shown to correlate with air trapping in asthmatic adults.
To evaluate the situation in children with chronic asthma, the researchers prospectively evaluated 32 such subjects. The children received twice daily doses of salmeterol 50 g and fluticasone 250 g. No baseline HRCT scans were made.
