In chemotherapy-naive patients with advanced or metastatic non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), weekly administration of carboplatin, docetaxel and irinotecan is “highly effective” and moderately toxic, according to the results of the first phase II study of this combination.
Based on the successful results of a phase I trial, a team at Metaxas Memorial Cancer Hospital, led by Dr. D. Pectasides, the chose a regimen of carboplatin area under the curve (AUC) 2, plus docetaxel 20 mg/m and irinotecan 60 mg/m on days 1, 8 and 15.
Chemotherapy was repeated every 5 weeks, with the dose adjusted if needed at the start of each new cycle. In the European Journal of Cancer for June, the team presents efficacy data on 47 patients with inoperable stage IIIB or IV NSCLC, some of whom had recurrent disease following surgery or radiation. Four patients achieved a complete response and 24 achieved a partial response, for an intent-to-treat response rate of 56%.
