Asthmatics Have Low Peroxynitrite Inhibitory Activity

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jul 10 –

Peroxynitrite inhibitory activity is decreased in the induced sputum of asthmatic patients, according to a report in the June issue of Thorax.

 Airway inflammation can lead to production of superoxide anion and nitric oxide, and a reaction between the two substances, in turn, creates peroxynitrite.

 Dr. H. Kanazawa and colleagues from Osaka City University, in Japan, examined whether peroxynitrite inhibitory activity in induced sputum of asthmatic patients correlates with clinical characteristics and airway inflammation indices. The team measured inflammatory indices and peroxynitrite inhibitory activity in 25 asthmatics and 12 controls.
