– Patients who develop acute respiratory distress within the first 48 hours after endotracheal extubation are unlikely to benefit significantly from noninvasive positive-pressure ventilation (NPPV), study results indicate.
In the June 26th issue of The Journal of the American Medical Association, investigators note that NPPV can prevent the need for intubation in patients with acute respiratory failure. While it is also used in patients who develop respiratory distress after extubation, data are lacking on its in this setting.
Dr. Sean P. Keenan of the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and colleagues randomized 81 such patients to supplemental oxygen alone (standard medical therapy) or to NPPV by face mask plus supplemental oxygen.
