Manual Aspiration May Be Preferable to Chest Tube Drainage For Pneumothorax

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – The findings from a recent study suggest that manual aspiration is comparable to chest tube (CT) drainage as a treatment for first episodes of primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

However, unlike CT-treated patients, those who undergo manual aspiration can often be discharged home the same day. Dr. Marc Noppen and colleagues, from the Academic Hospital in Brussels, Belgium, assessed the outcomes of 60 patients who were randomized to undergo manual aspiration or CT drainage for a first episode of primary spontaneous pneumothorax.

The immediate and 1-week success rates were not significantly different between the groups, the authors note. Immediate success rates were around 60% and 1-week rates were around 90%.
