Helium May Improve Albuterol Deposition in Asthmatics

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Jun 06 –

Albuterol nebulized with a combination of helium and oxygen (heliox) appears to achieve better airway deposition in emergency asthma treatment than does the agent nebulized using oxygen alone, according to researchers at the University of Chicago. Dr. Jesse B.

 Hall and colleagues note that this low-density mixture has been shown to improve airflow during asthma exacerbation, but whether this might result in improved particle deposition “has not been tested extensively.”
