While malnutrition in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients may not be due to an increased energy expenditure, insufficient energy intake can cause a significant negative energy balance.
An observational study during a rehabilitation programme by specialists in the People's Republic of China and the United Kingdom found a negative energy balance in seven out of 10 patients.
Energy expenditure profiles were evaluated in six COPD patients with body mass index (BMI) 18.5 kg/m², and four healthy age matched controls.
