NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 30 – Polymorphisms in the gene for p53, a tumor suppressor protein, are risk factors for lung cancer and the rate of these mutations differs by ethnicity, according to a report published in the May 1st issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
Dr. Christopher I. Amos, from M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, and colleagues tested for three p53 polymorphisms in lymphocyte DNA obtained from 635 lung cancer patients and from 635 matched controls without cancer. The polymorphisms include one exonic and two intronic. In several cell lines, the functional consequences of the polymorphisms were also determined.
