NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 15 – Tracking the sales of over-the-counter (OTC) medications could flag an outbreak of anthrax or other bioagents sooner than would traditional medical and public health surveillance systems, researchers suggest in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences for April 16.
Beginning before the anthrax outbreak in the US in 2001, Dr. Stephen E. Fienberg and associates, of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, developed a statistical detection system based on the premise that early symptoms of a bioagent attack would likely resemble those of ordinary diseases that people are accustomed to treating on their own.
