NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Apr 15 – While 88% of sleep apnea patients who undergo laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) report an improvement in snoring when questioned one month after the procedure, by 12 months only 65% report that their snoring is better than before the procedure.
As reported in the April issue of the Archives of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Dr. Gilead Berger, from the Sapir Medical Center in Kfar Saba, Israel, and colleagues assessed the medium- and long-term outcomes of 26 patients who underwent LAUP for sleep apnea. Patients were surveyed about snoring and other sleep-related symptoms before and after the procedure. Polysomnographic studies were also performed pre- and postoperatively.
