NEW YORK (Reuters Health) Mar 27 – In patients with mild asthma, cigarette smoking impairs the efficacy of treatment with short-term inhaled corticosteroids, according to a report in the March issue of Thorax.
In a double-blind, prospective, randomized, placebo-controlled study, Dr. N. C. Thomson and colleagues from Western Infirmary, Glasgow, UK, examined the effect of active smoking on the efficacy of inhaled corticosteroid treatment in patients with mild asthma. They studied the effect of treatment with 1000 mcg daily inhaled fluticasone propionate or placebo for 3 weeks in 38 steroid-na ve asthmatic adults, including 21 nonsmokers.
