Patients hospitalized for exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) can be treated successfully with an oral/metered-dose inhaler regimen.
The oral/metered-dose inhaler regimen is less resource-intensive than conventional intravenous drugs and nebulizer therapy, say investigators, and could be a potentially less expensive form of treatment.
The researchers, from Penobscot Respiratory in Bangor, Maine, United States, compared the efficacy of an oral/metered-dose inhaler regimen to an intravenous/nebulizer regimen of methylprednisolone, cefuroxime, inhaled albuterol and inhaled ipratropium bromide.
