Exhaled hydrogen peroxide concentration tied to asthma severity

מתוך medicontext.co.il

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – Compared to controls, steroid-naive asthmatics have elevated concentrations of exhaled hydrogen peroxide, according to researchers in Russia and the UK.

Dr. Alexander Emelyanov of Pavlov Medical University, St. Petersburg, and colleagues note that airway inflammatory cells, such as eosinophils and neutrophils, release agents which may result in the production of reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide.

To examine what relationship exhaled hydrogen peroxide might have with markers of airway inflammation in asthma, the researchers studied 70 steroid-naive atopic patients with unstable asthma. These were compared with 17 healthy controls. The findings appeared in the October issue of Chest.

The concentration of hydrogen peroxide in exhaled breath condensate was significantly elevated in the asthmatics compared to controls. In asthmatics, the mean level was 0.127 mol/L. In controls, the corresponding figure was 0.024 mol/L.

Furthermore, there was a significant correlation between measures of lung function (FEV1), bronchial reactivity to histamine (PC20), serum levels of eosinophil cationic protein and concentrations of hydrogen peroxide.

In light of these findings, the researchers conclude that measurement of exhaled hydrogen peroxide, "may be useful to assess airway inflammation and oxidative stress in asthmatic patients."
