Supplementary salmeterol more helpful than montelukast in asthma control

WESTPORT, CT (Reuters Health) – Inhaled salmeterol appears to be more effective than oral montelukast as supplementary treatment in asthmatics who remain symptomatic despite use of inhaled corticosteroids.

Dr. James E. Fish of Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, and colleagues compared the efficacy of the long-acting bronchodilator salmeterol with that of the leukotriene receptor antagonist montelukast as an adjunct in patients receiving low to intermediate doses of inhaled corticosteroids.

The researchers report in the August issue of Chest that they conducted a double-blind study of 476 such patients who were randomized to supplementary treatment with inhaled salmeterol 50 µg twice daily and 472 who received oral montelukast 10 mg four times daily.

At the end of the 12-week study, the researchers found that compared to montelukast, salmeterol treatment resulted in significantly greater improvement over baseline in morning peak expiratory flow and the percentage of symptom-free and rescue-free days. This was also true of the reduction in nocturnal awakenings and the reduction in total supplementary albuterol use.

Furthermore, say the researchers, salmeterol patients were "significantly more satisfied with their treatment regimen." Safety profiles were similar between treatments.
