In most cases, infant colic resolves within 3 months and does not have a lasting effect on the mother’s mental health, Canadian researchers report in the December issue of the Archives of Pediatric and Adolescence Medicine.
Dr. Tammy J. Clifford from the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario Research Institute, Ottawa, and colleagues collected data on 856 mothers and infants. The women were given self-administered questionnaires at 1 and 6 weeks postpartum and again at 2 and 6 months postpartum. Included in the first and last questionnaire were questions to assess anxiety, postnatal depression and social support.
