Resistance Exercise Improves Physical Performance in Older Adults

Low- and high-intensity resistance exercise training result in similar and significant improvements in strength, endurance, and stair climbing ability in older adults, according to a report in the June issue of the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

In a randomized controlled trial, researchers examined the effect of 6 months of high- or low-intensity resistance exercise in 62 men and women between the ages of 60 and 83 years. Sixteen subjects were randomly assigned to a control group, 24 were assigned to a low-intensity (LEX) group, and 22 were assigned to a high-intensity (HEX) group.

“Subjects trained at 50% of their one-repetition maximum (1RM) for 13 repetitions (LEX) or 80% of 1RM for eight repetitions (HEX) three times per week for 24 weeks using resistance machines,” Dr. Kevin R. Vincent, of the University of Florida, in Gainesville, and colleagues explain. “One set each of 12 exercises was performed.”
